What is your real hourly rate?

Your real hourly rate is what your classes pay in a week divided by every hour they take, including planning, travel, setting up, and admin. Put your own numbers in below to see it.

Why the class rate is not the whole story

A class that pays for an hour rarely takes an hour. Before it there is the plan, the drive, and the setting up. After it there is packing down, the drive home, and, at the end of the week, the invoice. None of that is on the timetable, and none of it is paid.

What to count

  • Planning: writing the class, choosing music, and preparing notes.
  • Travel: both ways, for every class.
  • Setting up and packing down: arriving early and staying after.
  • Admin: invoices, messages to studios and students, and bookkeeping.

Be honest with the numbers. The answer is only useful if it is true.

Questions people ask

How is the real hourly rate worked out?

It takes what your classes pay in a week and divides it by every hour the teaching takes: the classes themselves, planning, travel, setting up and packing down, and your weekly admin.

Is my information saved?

No. The calculator works in your browser, and nothing you type is saved or sent anywhere.

How can I raise my real hourly rate?

Either earn more per class or spend fewer unpaid hours around each one. Planning and invoicing are good places to start, because they repeat every week.
